Zac Hosking could push for a round 18 return, but the Canberra Raiders' star recruit thinks round 20 is his more likely return date.

The second-rower expected Raiders halfback Jamal Fogarty would return from biceps surgery at the same time - against the New Zealand Warriors at Canberra Stadium on July 19.

Hosking has managed to avoid shoulder surgery after dislocating it against the Gold Coast in round six.

It was the perfect preparation - a wet captain's run before the Canberra Raiders jetted north to take on the Dolphins in potentially torrential rain at Redcliffe.

Brisbane's forecast for Saturday is for 6-20 millimetres of rain, meaning a rain-soaked session at Raiders HQ on Friday morning was exactly what the Green Machine wanted.

It's an interesting battle between two teams who have exceeded expectations this season, with the Raiders going into this weekend's games eighth on the ladder.

Hudson Young recognized for toughness, set to provide utility value in State of Origin.

"He's tough." That's what makes Hudson Young an Origin player according to Ricky Stuart.

Stuart also backed his Canberra Raiders second-rower to provide plenty of utility value for the NSW Blues in the State of Origin opener at Homebush on Wednesday.

Young will make his Origin return, having played two games last year, as part of new Blues coach Michael Maguire's bench.
