  • Panthers poised to sign ex-Raiders half

    Brad Schneider released by Raiders

The Penrith Panthers and ex-Raiders half Brad Schneider are close to coming to terms with a deal as contract talks have progressed well.

Schneider departed the Canberra Raiders in the middle of the season to take up a short-term deal in the English Super League with Hull KR in search of more opportunities after failing to cement his spot in the team and falling down the pecking order below Matt Frawley and Ethan Strange as a back-up playmaker.

He has received just that in England. Schneider kicked a field goal in his debut game to win the game and has kicked on since, having been impressive in all of his Super League games to date.

“I feel Ethan is ready”: Raiders prodigy to make his debut

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has revealed he is proud of his side as they line up for an elimination final in the Hunter next weekend.

The eighth-placed finish means they will travel to take on the red-hot Newcastle Knights next weekend.

The dramatic finish to the season came after the Raiders were at one point battling for the top four, and while the club will be left to wonder what might have been, both Stuart and captain Elliott Whitehead suggested the Raiders had outperformed expectations.

"I don't know if anyone knows we are in the finals. We weren't meant to be," Stuart said during his post-game press conference when asked if he was disappointed if his side had missed a home final.

Canberra Raiders forward Elliott Whitehead has revealed he is keen to remain with the club beyond the end of his playing career.

Whitehead has played 187 games for the green machine since moving from the English Super League at the end of 2015, where he has previously played 177 games in that competition across stints with the Bradford Bulls and Catalans Dragons.

The 33-year-old forward has a single year remaining on his current deal, and could cross the 200-game barrier for the Raiders in that time, where he has become a leader of Ricky Stuart's squad and one of the club's most important players.
