Canberra Raiders face challenges after a heartbreaking finals loss, but coach Ricky Stuart remains optimistic.

    The Canberra Times

A devastated Canberra Raiders side will dust itself off as the club's premiership tilt continues the hard way, coach Ricky Stuart said after a gruelling loss to Brisbane in week one of the finals.

After the bunker twice denied them a win and a two-week rest before a home preliminary final, the Raiders were brought back to earth by a Reece Walsh masterclass and a Ben Hunt field goal in golden point to lose 29-28 on Sunday.

Stuart was left to pick up his players after their emotional turmoil before a sold-out crowd at GIO Stadium.

Michael Maguire downplays Walsh's headbutt; Broncos win 29-28 after trailing 28-12.

    The Canberra Times

Michael Maguire has attempted to dismiss Reece Walsh's headbutt of Hudson Young as two players having a "conversation", with the fullback's season now hanging in the balance.

Walsh's wild afternoon headlined the Broncos' epic 29-28 qualifying-final win over Canberra, with Ben Hunt winning the golden-point thriller with a 94th-minute field goal.

Walsh produced arguably the finest seven-minute stretch in finals history to get Brisbane back into the game, after they trailed 28-12 with 14 minutes to play.

    LeagueNews.co

Brisbane is anxiously awaiting the outcome regarding charges against lock Pat Carrigan and star fullback Reece Walsh, both of whom were sin-binned during a thrilling qualifying final against Canberra, which the Broncos won 29-28 in golden point.

Carrigan received a sin-bin in the 56th minute and was placed on report for a dangerous tackle on Morgan Smithies, resulting in a category-two HIA for the Raiders player, which he later passed.

Walsh, on the other hand, was penalized just three minutes earlier for leading with his head into a tackle against Hudson Young, who had previously provoked him. Both players found themselves in the sin-bin as a result.
