Canberra plans to present the most lucrative deal in the club's history to back-rower Hudson Young, who is also a target for PNG chiefs.

Sources familiar with the matter, who are not permitted to speak publicly, revealed on Thursday that the Raiders have raised their offer to $3.3 million across three years.

The club is eager for Young to sign before he becomes a free agent on November 1.

Young's manager, Sam Ayoub, is expected to arrive in the nation's capital within the next 24 hours, and club officials feel positive about reaching an agreement.

  • 'Talent': Maguire addresses half selection, new No.1

Ben Hunt replaces Tom Duffy as Brisbane's No. 7 against Canberra, aiming to boost the team's performance and avoid a wooden spoon.

    The Canberra Times

Coach Michael Maguire has no ill feelings towards young halfback Tom Duffy, but admits dropping him is what's needed to alleviate Brisbane's troubles.

Duffy was demoted to the Broncos bench ahead of their clash against Canberra on Friday after he played in the No.7 jersey in the club's dismal 40-6 thumping by the Warriors last Saturday.

Maguire opted to thrust veteran playmaker Ben Hunt into the position for the first time since round 18 instead, and the decision came after he slotted the game-winning field goal against the Raiders in last year's NRL finals series.

The coach is also hoping Hunt can provide the spark to help the reigning premiers (6-15) avoid a dreaded wooden spoon.

  • Raiders offer star forward Hudson Young record deal to keep him in Canberra

Raiders offer star forward Hudson Young record $1.1 million a season deal to keep him in Canberra

The Raiders offered Hudson Young $1.1m annually to deter interest from the PNG Chiefs before his contract ends next season.

    The Australian

The Raiders have tabled a $1.1m a year contract for Hudson Young - the richest offer in Canberra's 44-year history.

The remarkable offer is Canberra's attempt to thwart increasing interest in Young from the cashed-up PNG Chiefs.

Should Young reject Canberra's bid, the Raiders may give him a small window to negotiate with the Chiefs before November 1.

The Raiders are desperate to retain the NSW and Kangaroos edge forward but know their offer could be dwarfed by PNG.

Young comes off contract at the end of next season.
